What Is Ego4D?

Ego4D is a large public egocentric video dataset and benchmark suite, accessed under a licence agreement. Firsthand is not part of it.

Short answer

Ego4D is a large public egocentric video dataset and benchmark suite from a 2021 paper, described as 3,670 hours of daily-life activity video from camera wearers in 74 locations across 9 countries. It is third-party research that you access under its own licence agreement, and Firsthand is not part of it.

01

What is Ego4D?

Ego4D is described in the paper Ego4D: Around the World in 3,000 Hours of Egocentric Video (arXiv 2110.07058), which appeared at CVPR 2022, and on its project page. The abstract calls it a massive-scale egocentric video dataset and benchmark suite whose daily-life footage spans hundreds of scenarios such as household, outdoor, workplace and leisure. The authors say their aim is to push the frontier of first-person perception, and the project page says an international consortium of 13 universities led the effort.

02

Where does Firsthand fit next to Ego4D?

Ego4D is third-party research, and Firsthand is not part of it, endorsed by it or affiliated with its authors. Firsthand makes no claim that its data is in Ego4D or trained or evaluated any model, and no performance claim against it. The comparison page frames them this way: Ego4D is broad daily-life pretraining, and Firsthand is spec-fit manipulation capture. What Firsthand states is custom egocentric collection: a head-mounted global-shutter camera plus two wrist cameras on one hardware-triggered clock, with depth, 3D hand pose and action segments, collected fast, on demand and to a written skill spec.

03

What does the Ego4D dataset contain?

The abstract states 3,670 hours of video from 931 unique camera wearers in 74 worldwide locations and 9 countries. The project page gives 923 participants for the same collection, so the two official sources differ on the participant count. The GitHub README says over 3700 hours.

Portions of the video come with audio, 3D meshes of the environment, eye gaze, stereo, or synchronized video from multiple egocentric cameras at the same event. The project page adds textual narrations and says seven different head-mounted cameras were used. Footage is released at native resolution with a standardised 30fps version, which all benchmark results use.

04

What are the Ego4D benchmarks?

The abstract frames them around the first-person experience in the past (querying an episodic memory), the present (hand-object manipulation, audio-visual conversation and social interactions) and the future (forecasting activities). The project page lists five: Episodic Memory, Hand and Object Interaction, Audio-Visual Diarization, Social and Forecasting.

Per the project page, the hand-object benchmark has three tasks, point-of-no-return temporal localisation, active object detection and state-change classification, drawn from activities with many hand-object interactions such as knitting, carpentry and baking.

05

Can Ego4D be used commercially?

The project page says obtaining the dataset or any annotations requires first reviewing and accepting a licence agreement, after which AWS access credentials are emailed. The README’s licence section reads “Ego4D is released under the MIT License”, and the repository lists MIT, yet the project page separately requires the agreement for videos, metadata and annotations. The commercial-use terms of that agreement are Not stated in the sources read.

This site’s comparison page and licensing guide describe commercial use as permitted under Ego4D’s own agreement, and tell readers to confirm the current licence text. This page cannot confirm that from the sources read.

06

How does Ego4D relate to Ego-Exo4D?

The Ego-Exo4D entry, citing that project’s page, says Ego4D collected unscripted daily-life activities, while Ego-Exo4D focuses on skilled activities and adds synchronized egocentric and multiple exocentric views. Both datasets share one GitHub repository, which provides separate downloader commands, ego4d and egoexo.

07

When do you need custom egocentric data collection instead?

The comparison page says the gap with Ego4D is fitness, not legality: it describes unstructured daily activity without manipulation-grade 3D hand pose or frame-accurate action labels throughout, and says teams combine it with custom data, Ego4D for broad pretraining scale and Firsthand for spec-fit fine-tuning.

Write the target skills, environments and signals into a skill spec and confirm them on a Spec Pilot, a small fast first batch. Where coverage is deep, the median from signed spec to first validated batch is 48 hours; where it is thin, three to four weeks. Billing is per validated hour.
