What Is RoboCasa?

RoboCasa is a published large-scale kitchen simulation framework for training and benchmarking generalist robots, with LLM-guided tasks.

Last reviewed: October 2026

Short answer

RoboCasa is a simulation framework from UT Austin researchers for training generalist robots in everyday environments, centred on kitchens. Built on RoboSuite, it offers diverse scenes and 3D assets, language-model-guided tasks, human demonstrations and automatically generated trajectories, and is used as a simulated benchmark. It is simulation, not real-world capture.

01

What is RoboCasa?

RoboCasa is introduced in RoboCasa: Large-Scale Simulation of Everyday Tasks for Generalist Robots (arXiv 2406.02523) by Soroush Nasiriany and co-authors at UT Austin and NVIDIA Research, with an official project page and GitHub repository. The abstract says scaling is hindered by the lack of massive robot datasets and advocates realistic simulation to scale environments, tasks and datasets. Read: the paper, project page and README.

02

Where does Firsthand fit next to RoboCasa?

RoboCasa is third-party research. Firsthand is not affiliated with its authors and claims no use, training or compatibility with RoboCasa or any named model. Firsthand does not capture simulated data. It captures first-person human video, fast, on demand and to a written spec, not robot data: 21 keypoints per hand with a visibility flag, wrist trajectories and action segments. The only language field is one task instruction per episode.

03

What does the RoboCasa simulation framework include?

Per the paper, RoboCasa builds on RoboSuite, a MuJoCo-based framework, and extends it to mobile manipulators, including humanoids and quadrupeds with arms. It models 10 kitchen floor plans in 12 styles, giving 120 scenes with interactable appliances, plus 2,509 object assets in 153 categories. The project page says RoboCasa365 scales this to 2,500+ kitchen scenes.

04

What tasks and demonstrations does RoboCasa provide?

The paper defines 100 tasks: 25 atomic tasks covering eight skills, and 75 composite tasks drawn from 20 kitchen activities that language models helped propose. Four operators collected 50 demonstrations per atomic task, and an extended MimicGen added 100K trajectories. The project page states RoboCasa365 has 365 tasks, 600+ hours of human demonstrations and 1,600+ hours of generated ones.

05

How is RoboCasa used to evaluate generalist robot and VLA policies?

The paper trains a BC-Transformer policy conditioned on a language goal and tests it on unseen objects and styles. The project page says RoboCasa365 supports multi-task learning, lists Diffusion Policy, π₀ and GR00T, and links a leaderboard. Whether the paper evaluates vision-language-action models is Not stated in the sources read; scores are not reproduced.

06

How does RoboCasa compare with LIBERO, CALVIN and SimplerEnv?

All are simulated and ask different questions. LIBERO targets lifelong knowledge transfer, CALVIN chained language instructions, and SimplerEnv checks simulated results against real-world runs. RoboCasa centres on kitchen scale and generated data. Scores are not comparable across them.

07

Why does real-world egocentric data still matter?

The paper says its dataset holds coarse manipulation but not highly dexterous, deformable or bimanual skills. A simulator also fixes its scenes and tasks, and cannot tell a program whether its own tasks, environments or people are covered by training data. That belongs to a data spec.

08

How do you get custom egocentric data?

RoboCasa is a simulator, not a source of human video. For first-person human video of particular tasks, environments or people, write them into a spec and confirm it on a Spec Pilot, a small fast first batch. The median from signed spec to first validated batch is 48 hours where coverage is deep and three to four weeks where it is thin. Billing is per validated hour.

Frequently asked questions

What is RoboCasa?
A simulation framework from UT Austin researchers for training and benchmarking generalist robots, centred on kitchens.
How many tasks and scenes does RoboCasa have?
The paper states 100 tasks and 120 kitchen scenes. The project page states RoboCasa365 has 365 tasks and 2,500+ scenes.
Is RoboCasa real-world data?
No. The framework and its demonstrations are simulated, though the paper includes a real-robot kitchen experiment.
Is RoboCasa free to use?
The README lists the MIT License for code and CC BY 4.0 for assets and datasets. Not legal advice.
What results does RoboCasa report?
The abstract reports a clear scaling trend with generated data. Scores are not reproduced here.
Does Firsthand use RoboCasa, and can I request a custom dataset?
Firsthand is not affiliated with the RoboCasa authors and claims no use, training or compatibility. You can request a custom egocentric dataset, confirmed first on a Spec Pilot.
