Can EgoDex Be Used Commercially?

EgoDex is released under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) [VERIFY]. The NC term prohibits commercial use outright, and the ND term additionally prohibits distributing modified or derivative versions of the dataset — even for non-commercial purposes.

Training a model intended for commercial deployment is itself a commercial use of the underlying data, which the NC clause prohibits regardless of how the resulting model is licensed. The ND clause is a separate, additional restriction: even a research team staying strictly non-commercial cannot legally redistribute a filtered, re-annotated, or otherwise modified version of EgoDex. Both restrictions exist independently of data quality — a CC BY-NC-ND dataset can have excellent hand-pose coverage and still be unusable for a commercial roadmap.

Always confirm the current license text directly before relying on it for a commercial roadmap — terms can be updated after a dataset is described elsewhere.

When a well-fitting public corpus like EgoDex is blocked on licensing rather than content, the alternative is commissioning capture against a written skill spec that names the exact hand-pose and task coverage needed, rather than attempting to work around a non-commercial or no-derivatives restriction.
