De-identification
Irreversibly removing personal identifiers like faces, plates and screens.
Definition
De-identification is the irreversible removal of personal identifiers from footage — faces, licence plates, legible screens and documents, and spoken identifiers — so an un-consented person cannot be recognized. Done at the pixel level, it cannot be reversed by a downstream user.

Why it matters
Egocentric capture inevitably records bystanders. De-identification is what keeps a real-world dataset privacy-compliant without discarding the training signal in the operator’s own hands and viewpoint.

How Firsthand handles it
Firsthand detects and irreversibly blurs faces, plates and screens at ingest, confirms it with a human reviewer, and discards any clip where a bystander cannot be covered.
